About Jeff Adachi
Jeff Adachi has served as the Public Defender of San Francisco since 2003.
After graduating from U.C. Hastings Law School, Jeff began his career in the Public Defender's office in 1986, and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the City's top trial attorneys. In 1998, Jeff was appointed as the Chief Attorney, where Jeff worked to bring the office into the 21st century by instituting cutting edge management practices and technology. In 2000, Jeff received the City's top Managerial Excellence award.
In 2002, Jeff campaigned for and was elected Public Defender. For many years, the office had suffered from inadequate staffing and high caseloads. Jeff improved the quality of representation by ensuring that the office had adequate staffing and putting workload and caseload standards in place. At the same time, he increased productivity and accountability by implementing effective training and employee evaluations.
By 2006, the office established a reputation as a national model for representation of the poor. The office's award-winning Clean Slate program, which helps rehabilitated persons clear their criminal history and live productive lives, has been replicated throughout the state. The office's juvenile unit has helped hundreds of children receive social services and care, and the MAGIC programs have engaged communities in crime prevention through collaborative strategic planning. In 2007, the office received the top award given to a public law office from the American Bar Association.
In 2009, Jeff received the California Lawyer of the Year award and was recognized by the California Public Defender's Association in 2010 for his work advocating for public support on behalf of all public defenders. In 2012, Jeff received the National Legal Aid and Defender's Association top award for legal advocacy. In 2013, Jeff received the SF Lawyers' Committee's Access to Justice Award and the Vanguard Public Official of the Year Award. In 2015, Jeff received the American Bar Association's Award for Public Service, in 2016, the Athenian Award for High Quality Legal Advocacy, and in 2017, the Youth Champion Award.
